Creating Homes, Building Dreams, Providing a Future
Since our inception in 1993, HDA has offered opportunities for our neighbors both near and far to help serve the families of eastern Kentucky. Over the past 25 years, our volunteers have helped us build over 250 new homes and repair nearly 700 existing homes which combined have benefited over 2,300 of our low-income families.
Our volunteer program is unique. Working alongside our staff of professional carpenters, you provide long-lasting and high-quality solutions that allow our families to live better for years to come - not just get them through the winter.

Support the Volunteer Program
Have you ever wondered how your volunteer fees are used? Every dollar we receive helps fund our mission. The majority of the volunteer fees cover:

Project materials,

Volunteer housing, and
-
Staff time
The remainder is used by the Housing Development Alliance to provide affordable housing for Appalachian Kentucky families in need.
Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic has required us to pause our Volunteer Program, which has made a major impact on our services. Due to an abundance of caution, we canceled this year’s Repair Affair and Community House Raising and have been unable to welcome local and regional volunteer groups to any of our work sites since the spring.
We’d like to give you an opportunity to help Appalachian families through HDA in another way! You can help fund volunteer activities in 2021 by donating this fall to HDA’s Volunteer Program. For a gift of $20, we will send you a 2020 Volunteer T-shirt! Just fill out the order form, which goes directly to Janie Britton, our Volunteer Coordinator.
Due to a limited inventory we will send you a T-Shirt as close to the requested size as possible.
Real Volunteers and Their Stories
"Volunteering with HDA helped me decide my future."
Meet Alyssa Parrett from Versailles, KY. Alyssa first
volunteered with HDA three years ago when her minister
and mentor from the South Elkhorn Christian Church,
Holly Fuqua, encouraged her to go on their annual
volunteer trip to Hazard, KY. Though Alyssa had
no interest in giving up her summer vacation to travel
into the mountains of Central Appalachia to volunteer
as a construction worker, she agreed to give it a try.
Now, three years later, Alyssa loves building and repairing
homes and has volunteered with HDA for three consecutive
years.
“I love coming to Hazard and volunteering with
HDA. It is hard work, but I love learning about carpentry
and love offering my hand to those in need.”
Alyssa recently graduated from high school, finishing near the top
of her class and did exceptionally well on her college
entrance exam (ACT). She had plenty of options to choose
from when deciding on her secondary education. Her
choice, however, was to begin classes at a local technical school
in Lexington to pursue a degree and certifications in
carpentry and construction management.

"Volunteering with HDA helped me decide my future," she said. "Getting to work alongside their staff of professional carpenters is unbelievable. They are friendly, encouraging, and they know what they are doing.”
"It feels good to volunteer your time and actually feel needed," she continued. "The carpenters teach you everything you need to know, and they expect you to do it and do it correctly. They have a lot of work to accomplish every day, and it takes us all to get these homes built or repaired quickly and efficiently."
HDA would like to wish Alyssa Parrett much success in chasing her dream and would like to thank the South Elkhorn Christian Church for their years of support.
