Repair Affair Set for June 8th/UPDATE: Event Postponed

**UPDATE** With great disappointment, we have decided to postpone our 2019 Repair Affair due to adverse weather conditions which will make it potentially dangerous. Rest assured, though, that the work we've promised to do will get done! We'll be working with our volunteers to re-schedule project dates this summer (as their schedules allow) and will bring you coverage of those as they happen. The Housing Development Alliance (HDA) will hold its 20th annual Repair Affair on Sat., June 8th.

The event, which unites the community in providing high-quality home repairs to 10 families in a single day, requires at least 100 local volunteers to be successful.

Ten work sites are pre-selected, with at least 10 volunteers assigned to each location.

Typical repair projects include repairing roofs, completing various weatherization projects, repairing floors, building wheelchair ramps and porches, and other similar tasks. The repairs enable elderly, disabled, and low-income families to remain safely in their homes.

All repairs completed during the Repair Affair are done at no cost to those in need. To accomplish this goal, HDA must raise $10,000 in order to complete all repairs successfully.

“This event demonstrates our community’s willingness to come together and help those who need it most,” said HDA Executive Director Scott McReynolds. “Since our first event in 1999, more than 1,200 volunteers have repaired over 145 houses.”

“The Repair Affair allows communities all across Perry County to see what volunteering and donating and caring can do,” he continued. “It’s an excellent example of eastern Kentucky people helping eastern Kentucky people, and by doing that, we once again affirm our belief in a positive, vibrant future for Appalachian Kentucky.”

The event typically draws volunteers from local churches, schools, and civic organizations, as well as many service-minded individuals.

On the day of the event, volunteers meet with HDA’s carpenters at 8 a.m. for breakfast at Wendy’s in Hazard before traveling to designated work sites. There will be a break for lunch, which will be provided onsite, with the day’s activities wrapping up by 4 p.m.
